Lesson Plan: Using Desktop Mini Machine Tools for Woodworking and Machining Education

课室实景图3.jpg

1. Teaching Objectives

· Develop Hands-On Skills: Through hands-on operation of machine tools (such as metal lathes, milling machines, drill presses, etc.), students will experience the complete process from design to machining, enhancing their practical skills.

· Understand Machining Principles: Students will learn how to use precision machine tools to process wood and soft metal parts, gaining an understanding of the working principles and applications of machine tools.

· Stimulate Creative Thinking: Through challenges and problem-solving in practical applications, students will develop their innovative thinking and problem-solving abilities.

· Cross-Disciplinary Knowledge Application: By involving knowledge from mechanical principles, mathematical calculations, material properties, etc., students will cultivate the ability to integrate knowledge across multiple disciplines.

· Enhance STEAM Abilities: By applying knowledge from "Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics" (STEAM), students will develop core competencies that contribute to a comprehensive education in STEAM subjects.

2. Tools Needed

· Desktop Mini Metal Lathe: Used for machining small soft metal parts, students will learn lathe operations and understand the principles of turning.

· Desktop Mini Milling Machine: Used for processing wood and soft metal parts, students will master basic milling techniques.

· Desktop Mini Grinding Machine: Used for precise grinding of parts, helping students understand part accuracy and surface finish.

· Desktop Drill Press: Used for drilling, engraving, and precise machining, students will understand the drilling process and precision control.

· Common Hand Tools: Such as hammers, screwdrivers, pliers, etc., for auxiliary operations alongside machine tools.

· Measuring Instruments: Such as calipers, micrometers, and protractors, used for accurate measurement and calibration of parts during machining.

· Safety Equipment: Including safety glasses, gloves, and ear protection to ensure students’ safety during operations.

3. Expected Learning Outcomes

· Machining Skills: Students will gain proficiency in using lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and other basic machine tools, enabling them to independently complete simple part machining tasks.

· Understanding Machining Processes: Students will understand the role of different machine tools in the machining process and be able to select appropriate tools and processes to meet design requirements.

· Enhance Spatial Thinking: Through hands-on machining, students will better understand three-dimensional structures and improve their spatial imagination and design capabilities.

· Problem-Solving Skills: Students will be able to design and create small parts that meet functional requirements and solve practical problems.

· Teamwork and Communication Skills: By working in teams to complete projects, students will develop their teamwork spirit and improve communication and coordination skills.

· Innovative Design Abilities: Students will develop innovative solutions while addressing machining challenges, sparking their creative thinking.

· Safety Awareness: Through standardized training in machine tool operation, students will learn proper safety procedures, enhancing their safety awareness and reducing the risk of accidents.

Sample Lesson Plan:

Lesson 1: Introduction to Machine Tools and Basic Operations

· Content: Introduce the working principles and basic structure of desktop mini machines (such as metal lathes, milling machines, drill presses, etc.).

· Activities:

Explain the functions and principles of each type of machine tool.

Demonstrate safe operation procedures (including setup, startup, and shutdown processes).

Students will work in groups to get hands-on experience with each type of machine tool.

Lesson 2: Woodworking and Simple Part Production

· Content: Use milling machines and lathes for simple woodworking part production (e.g., making a small wooden box or simple wooden parts).

· Activities:

Students design simple wooden parts based on drawings.

Perform milling and turning operations on wood.

Complete initial woodworking parts and discuss challenges encountered during the machining process and solutions.

Lesson 3: Metal Part Machining and Precision Control

· Content: Use mini lathes and milling machines for metal part machining (e.g., small soft metal gears or brackets).

· Activities:

Students design metal part drawings.

Perform machining of metal parts using lathes and milling machines.

Emphasize precision and size control, and demonstrate how to use measuring tools for calibration.

Lesson 4: Integration and Final Project

· Content: Integrate woodworking and metalworking techniques to design and produce a small comprehensive project.

· Activities:

Students design their project, selecting appropriate materials and machining processes.

Work in small teams to design, machine, and assemble their projects.

After completion, students present their projects and engage in a debrief to discuss any issues faced and solutions found.

With this lesson plan, your customers can guide students to gradually master the use of machine tools while enhancing their practical skills, problem-solving abilities, and creative thinking, ultimately achieving the goals of STEAM education.
